International day of prayer and awareness against human trafficking:
A Holy Hour and mass was held on 8th Feb, the Feast of St. Josephine Bakhita, who was herself taken as a slave from her native Sudan. This is an annual event to raise awareness and pray for an end to all forms of human trafficking and exploitation. Unfortunately this problem is worldwide and touches us all. Sr Claire Griffin from ACRATH - Australian Catholic Religious against Human Trafficking –pointed out ways we can help.
Shop ethically. Use your purchasing power to prevent slavery in the supply chains of goods you purchase by always seeking out Fairtrade, UTZ, or Rainforest Alliance Certification of tea, coffee and chocolate, particularly chocolate with millions spent on it over Easter.
As a corollary investigate how the major stores stack up in paying the women who make our clothes a fair wage. Some big brands are keeping women in poverty, working them for more than 12 hours a day for as little as 39cents an hour. Is that a FAIR GO? Investigate at http://whatshe makes.oxfam.org.au
